Ntrip Caster on a GS18 Base sending RTK corrections to a GS05 Rover via Internet connection
Configure GS Base (with static IP) in Leica Captivate Base mode
It is important to remember that to successfully set up the Caster and RTK stream via the Internet and make it accessible, the used SIM card must be capable of providing a public IP. Consult with your Internet provider and ensure the SIM card being used fulfils this requirement.
Additionally, in this case, we are using a SIM card providing a static IP. In case the SIM card being used does not provide a static IP, a DNS service needs to be set up.
the major goals of this first step are:
-
Configure internet access in the GS so the Mobile IP Address gets defined.
-
Enable the Base RTK 1 interface in the Base Connections Settings. Note that this RTK interface is theoretically irrelevant for the Ntrip Caster setup (i.e. these corrections will not be used), but it is recommended to activate it to avoid overwriting the Ntrip Caster information, in future sessions.
We will also configure the coordinates of the setup point and the antenna parameters.
Configure the Ntrip Caster in the Webserver
- Connect your GS18 to the Webserver, and go to Instrument > Operation mode and antenna selection.
- If Antenna selection and base position were not entered in Leica Captivate Base mode, you can input them here. Otherwise, the values should be already filled upon loading the page.
- Set the Activate Ntrip caster checkbox as checked, and fill up the required fields according to your preferences. Remember to hit the Save button at the bottom to store the information.
Note that Mobile Internet IP address read-only field appears automatically filled. This is thanks to the fact that the Internet connection was established in Leica Captivate Base mode (the first step above this one). Having not done so, the field would be shown empty and the RTK stream would be possible just via WLAN.
Configure the Ntrip Client in Leica Captivate Rover mode
- The last step will be no different than configuring one connection to any other Ntrip Server, entering the GS18 mobile IP address, the defined port and Ntrip credentials in the Webserver as values for the Server Address, Port, Ntrip User & Password in Leica Captivate prompts.
- When pressing Source, the mount point table will display the unique mount point that's been defined. Otherwise, this could indicate a problem with the configuration or internet access.
- Once the mount point is selected, it should be possible to start the RTK corrections stream.
- For the case above a SIM card with public fixed IP is considered, meaning that this IP remains the same over time and hence, always reachable by the rovers. In case the SIM card provides a dynamic IP address, the base would not be reachable anymore after restarting the GS Internet connection or even after a certain time transmitting: the IP would not match anymore with what was entered in the Ntrip connection, so the RTK stream will be interrupted.
- Setting up your DNS is a simple process and quite similar independently of the chosen service provider. Watch the video below to see how this is done using no-ip service, as an example, and how to configure the DNS accordingly in Leica Captivate Base mode.
