How to connect Leica Machine Control to SmartFix

This guide explains how to configure Leica Machine Control systems running the MC1 software (such as on the MCP80 panel) to receive RTK corrections from the SmartFix network.

IMPORTANT: TODO for Team: Please insert screenshots of the MC1/MCP80 interface for steps 1-4. The current text flow is accurate but requires visual companions for machine operators.

1. Accessing GNSS Settings

Before configuring the network, ensure your machine's modem or control box has an active internet connection (via an inserted data SIM or Wi-Fi).

  1. From the main MC1 run screen, tap the Main Menu icon.
  2. Navigate to Settings (gear icon) > GNSS.
  3. Locate the connection profile settings (usually under Network RTK or NTRIP Profile).
  4. Choose to Edit an existing SmartFix profile or create a New profile specifically for your operational region.

2. Configuring SmartFix Parameters

Within the NTRIP profile settings, populate the fields with the critical SmartFix server details. Refer to the Connection Parameters table for the exact port required for your area.

  • Server / IP Address: Enter www.smartfix.co.nz (or 60.234.42.123).
  • Port: Enter your desired regional port (e.g., 4819 for Auckland Fixed network).
  • NTRIP Username: Enter your SmartFix Username exactly.
  • NTRIP Password: Enter your SmartFix Password (Case Sensitive).
  • Data Format: Ensure this is set to RTCM 3 (or RTCM 3.x MSM if specifically requested).

3. Selecting the Mountpoint

  1. Tap Load Mountpoints (or Get Source Table). > Diagnostic Tip: If the mountpoint list fails to populate, the panel does not have a working internet connection to reach the SmartFix server. Check your SIM card and APN settings.
  2. Select your desired mountpoint from the populated list.
    • For a Fixed Network port, select the fixed mountpoint for your Master Station (e.g., AUCKfixedADV4).
    • For a Single Baseline port, select the single mountpoint (e.g., AUCKsingleADV4).
  3. Tap OK (or the Green Checkmark) to save the connection profile.

4. Verifying the Connection

  1. Return to the main MC1 run or grading screen.
  2. Observe the GNSS/Position status icon in the top system bar.
  3. The system should dial into the network, process the incoming corrections, and the position status should transition to RTK Fixed (usually denoted by a solid green indicator or specific icon state in MC1).
  4. Once Fixed, your machine is receiving centimeter-level corrections and is ready for precision operations.
