How to complete a Topo survey using Base & Rover with Leica Captivate CS20

This guide assumes that the RTK Profile, Working Style and GS connections are already configured. This guide is for Leica Captivate v4 and above.

Step 1: Prepare the system

  1. Turn on the CS20 controller, the GNSS Rover and the GNSS Reference antennae
  2. From the Home screen, select Settings, then Connections, then RTK Rover Wizard
  3. Select Load an existing profile, then F6 Next
  4. Select a suitable base/rover Radio profile from the drop-down list
  5. Select F6-Finish
  6. The icon on the status line shows a radio modem

Step 2: Create a job

  1. From the Home screen, press F6 Jobs

  2. Select F2 New, then give the job a name

  3. Select F6 Page, then choose your required coordinate system. The coordinate system definition may include a geoid model.

  4. Select F6 Page, then choose your code list

  5. Select F1 Store, then F1 OK

  6. If you have data to load into the job, insert a USB in the base of the controller with a CSV file in the Data folder

  7. In this QRG we will use a text file (Point,N,E,H,Code with or without a header line)

  8. From the Home Screen, Select the job in the job carousel

  9. Import Data - ASCII/GSI

  10. Data type - ASCII Data

  11. From – USB

  12. From file – Select the required CSV file

  13. To Job – Pick your job

  14. Select F3 Display to review the file content

    1. Close “X” to close the viewer

  15. Select Fn – F1 Settings to define the order of the data in the file

  16. F1 OK to save the changes

  17. F1 OK to Import

  18. Tap on the job in the carousel

  19. Select View and Edit data

    1. Confirm the points have imported, then F1 OK

  20. Make sure your job is in the center of the job carousel

Step 3: Start the base

  1. From the Home screen, select Switch to Base from the Apps carousel
  2. After the base is connected…
  3. Select Base Setup, then Over Known Point (you may also use “over known point” option if you do not have the base station coordinate)
  4. Slot the height hook into the tribrach and read to the white line on the height hook. Enter the antenna height
  5. Make sure the Antenna type is GS16 Tripod
  6. Select the point ID for the base
  7. Select F6 Next, then Return to Rover mod

Step 4: Start a survey

  1. After a few seconds in Rover mode, the position icon will change to a cross, showing that the rover has initialised
  2. From the Home screen, Select the Measure app
  3. Enter a Point ID
  4. Enter the antenna height (1.8 or 2m on snap lock pole)
  5. Select F6 Page
  6. Select Find and add codes
  7. Select a code for the point you are measuring (if required)
  8. When ready to measure, press F1 Measure
  9. The point will be stored
  10. Repeat step 11 for each surveyed point

If the code is for a stringable feature (e.g. Top of Bank) a default string number will be present. Select + or – to change string number to create a new string

Step 5: Export ASCII Data

  1. Insert a USB into the base of the controller
  2. From the Home Screen, Select the job in the job carousel
  3. Export data – ASCII
  4. To device – USB
  5. To folder – Data
  6. Output filename – enter as required
  7. Select Fn F1 Settings
  8. Select the required delimiter, which fields to export and the order of export
  9. Select F1 OK
  10. Select F1 OK

Step 6: Export DXF Data

  1. Insert a USB into the base of the controller
  2. From the Home screen, Select the job in the job carousel
  3. Export data – DXF
  4. To device – USB
  5. To folder – Data
  6. Output filename – enter as required
  7. Select Fn F1 Settings

  8. Check the 3 pages of settings match your requirements

  9. Select F1 OK

  10. Select F1 OK
